The mood outside of France was one of rationing, fabric being one of the most important commodities. Because of the lack of French fashion influence the ready to wear industry in America experienced a surge. Utility clothing and uniforms were the rage until the war ended. In 1947 Dior introduced his "New Look" The new look was characterized by a silhouette of rounded shoulders, nipped in waist and full skirt. The decade was characterized by skirt suits, tweeds, plaids, and evening looks and sportswear.
