1950's Pierre Balmain Black Silk Faille and Silk Chiffon Cocktail Dress
1950's Pierre Balmain Black Silk Faille and Silk Chiffon Cocktail Dres
This is a gorgeous piece of fashion history from the 55,000 Dresses Collection. This little black dress was designed by famous luxury French couturier Pierre Balmain who founded this fashion house in 1945.
*Based on the design details (lattice work on the waistline and silhouette), and labels I am dating this piece late 1940’s (48-49), early 1950’s - pre 1952.
The black silk faille cocktail dress has a full skirt and beautiful silk chiffon layer covering the bodice and twisting over the shoulder to comprise the strap. The under bodice is a sweetheart neckline that is covered by black layer of silk chiffon. The waist of the bodice is an intricate weaving technique that weaves the silk chiffon through the faille. A small bow completes the bodice design under the breasts. The bodice has boning down each side and interior hanger loops attached at inside bust.
The back metal zipper closure (CONMAR silver metal zipper colored black - see image) is covered with 2 fabric button closures and fabric covered buttons.
The interior label is affixed on the black grosgrain waist stay. There is a black Saks Fifth Avenue label sewn into the interior skirt seam (see image)
The dress is shown in the images with and without a petticoat. There is a 2" hem allowance.
The color may vary because of lighting, the dress is a true black.
